Featured Artist of the Week: Sister Golden Hair

Sparrow Collective

Emily Simonis, creator of Sister Golden Hair, excels at taking traditional craft and completely modernizing it.  Her embroidered wall mounted hoops tie together classic workmanship and motifs with hilarious, in your face subject matter.  Her craftsmanship is superb, with tight, even stitches and beautiful artistry.  Mix that with her amazing sense of humor and you end up with some great pieces.

We asked Emily a few questions about her work and thoughts on being a maker. Here is what she had to say.

When did you start creating? And what inspired you to do so?
My mom is an artist/art teacher and I grew up making things. I started embroidering about 3 years ago. Right off the bat I had a suspicion I’d fall in love with it. I appreciate a craft that requires not much more than your two hands. And I love that there are not a lot of rules. I think of it as painting with thread.

What is your creative background?
I have a Bachelor or Fine Arts from UWM and I was a total art weirdo in high school. Now, my day job is as a graphic designer… which also lends itself to my more typographic work

Where do you see yourself and your brand going?
I’m not sure, but I still love embroidering as much as I did when I started and I’m always thinking of new things to try. I’d love to make this something that is a more “full-time” gig… but we’ll see!

Where do you find inspiration for your work?
Everywhere! But one funny place is in all the stupid memes and things people post on Facebook. Some are so dumb, and I’ll think THAT would be hilarious embroidered with some flowers.

What is your favorite part of being a maker?
I’m bad at sitting still and I need someplace to filter my energy. The Devil will find work for idle hands to do… right?! ;) I also love love love being part of the community of Milwaukee makers. There is so much crazy good talent in this city!

Do you have any advice for new or aspiring makers?
Put yourself out there in as many ways as possible. I’ve done some terrible art fairs where I’ve sat for 6 hours and made $20. But the more you experience, the more you will learn what is a good match for you.
